Rose Falcon Opens Up About Her New EP, ’19th Avenue (Volume 2)’

Show Dog-Universal Music recording artist Rose Falcon recently released a brand new five-song EP entitled, 19th Avenue (Volume 2). Falcon, who is part of CMT’s Next Women of Country campaign, is breaking into Country radio with “If Love Had a Heart,” the lead single from her new EP.

CountryMusicIsLove recently sat down with Falcon to discuss her influences, songwriting, the EP and much more. Check out our interview below…

CMIL: Your EP features five tracks -why did you select these five to be featured on the release?

RF: These are my favorites. Out of everything that we’ve cut so far, these are the ones I was holding on to just waiting for the right time to put these out. We have a single out called “If Love Had A Heart.” It’s probably my favorite, or the one I’m most proud of. And then second to that would be “Like Crazy” which is a quieter, more intimate song that I wrote by myself.

CMIL: Tell us more about the single.

RF: It’s about wishing love was a little bit kinder on your heart. I wrote it a couple years ago with a guy named Tommy Lee James on my birthday. It was a good birthday gift because the minute we wrote it, I knew it was special. I write a lot. Sometimes within a month I could write twelve songs and sometimes there’s just one that sticks out.

CMIL: Some of your songs of been recorded by artists such as Lady Antebellum and Faith Hill. As a songwriter, how do you decide which songs to keep for yourself and which ones to let go?

RF: It’s funny. I kind of have the mind if somebody really wants to record one of my songs they can and I’ll write a better one. I feel like I can always write another song. When you’re a songwriter your last song is always your best song. You are always in love with what’s new. I feel like if it’s somebody like Faith Hill or Lady Antebellum that I am a fan of, I’m going to most likely give them the song.

CMIL: It’s a great time to be a female in Country music, would you agree?

RF: I never think of myself in terms of like, I’m a girl and this is a boy. I’m just a singer telling the truth from my perspective. I used to have more thought on why females weren’t doing so well. I think it’s because a lot of the fans are women. The reason I feel like I have a place is because I want to relate to women. I want to be their friend and I want to speak to them through my songs. I think that might be what’s missing in terms of women not doing as well as men.

CMIL: Do you consider yourself a voice for other women?

RF: I don’t want to speak for them. I want to speak to them, to their heart and just relate to them. I want to be a best friend.

CMIL: Jon Bon Jovi recently gave you one heck of an endorsement saying, “In an era filled with contest winners and formatted radio playlists occasionally there comes along a true artist who has the ability to make you listen as well as feel. Rose Falcon has been at this for a long time. She’s an old soul in the voice of a beautiful young lady. She speaks of a life lived. She’s earned this shot. From backyard to bar to arena stages. Take a listen. You won’t be disappointed.” How did that come about and how does it feel to have someone like him say such great things about you and your music?

RF: I’ve known him since I was probably about four years old. He and my dad have written together for a long time. I never expected anything from Jon. He’s more of like an uncle to me. He’s real particular about what he likes and what he doesn’t like and I’ve never asked for a favor or help, but he loves my record. He’ll genuinely just call dad and be like, “What’s going on with Rosy? Are they doing what they need to be doing?” He’ll mentor me. When he comes to Nashville he will set aside time to sit down with me and actually have a one-on-one conversion about what is going on with my career because he really believes in it and so he made that statement. For me, I was shocked by it ‘cause it was so sincere and kind.
